For the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Maintenance of Certification exam (aka MOC, or recertification exam), the pass rate has been 100% for many years. For any years in which the pass rate was not 100%, the maximum number of first-time failures that we were notified of was 2.

I went through a popular DVD course. In hindsight, it was a HORRIBLE use of my precious time. When it comes to PBR’s system to help you pass, I see the ABP content specifications for the pediatric boards as “outside material.” I’d say 80-90% of the content specifications are covered in the PBR material. However, my strong recommendation is that you do not get caught up with trying to cover every single topic in the content specs. PBR has has more than enough information in it to help you pass. Once you have used and mastered the PBR “roadmap to success” that’s outline in the front of the book, then start looking at “outside material.”

The American Board of Pediatrics initial certification exam is very tough. It's not uncommon to hear of pediatricians failing multiple times. Before the American Board of Pediatrics placed a 7-year limit on the time after residency that you are allowed to take the exam, someone even emailed me to let me know that they had failed ELEVEN times. Since the rule change, we commonly hear of people coming to PBR after they have failed 3, 4, 5, 6 and even SEVEN times.
So, we work diligently to guide them to a pass, but it's clear that if you fail this exam once, your chances of failing again are much higher than a first-time test-taker. Also, we've found that there is a tremendous difference between access and execution. Even those with the best of intentions often struggle with self-accountability to follow through with the plans we lay out for them. And many pediatricians with history of failing board exams tend to struggle with test-anxiety and other personal factors that fall under a unique set of challenged. So, while we can provide a proven roadmap to success, offer private consultation calls, and a live course, there are many more pieces that must come from the individual and are out of our control. I try to make sure that there is almost NO need for you to cross-reference topics across multiple study resources or chapters.
For example, while you’re studying about one of the “Diamond” diseases (e.g. Diamond Blackfan), you’ll also see notes about the other “Diamond” disease (e.g. Schwachman Diamond) right next to it as a reminder of other similarly named diseases. You’ll also be given a review of that subject, right there and then.
Another HUGE example has to do with images. Most people use Zitelli as an atlas. If you have to reading about a topic in my study guide, then look it up in Zitelli’s index and then reading about it in Zitelli, you’ll spend an hour reading about one topic. That’s extremely inefficient and adds countless hours to the > 200 hours most people spend studying for the exam. I’ve included high-quality image web-links to topics throughout the core study guide for quick referencing so that the process is streamlined and not redundant.

The information you need to know is the exact same for the initial and the recertification exams. I have written questions for the pediatric recertification exam.
Based on the American Board of Pediatrics’ requested format, it is my very strong belief that the pool of questions is the same. BUT, I do think that the recertification exam questions tend to be the ones that are more straightforward. That means you will not need to know as much detail for pediatric subspecialties.
